During our second week of poetry at Jordan, we did some thinking about what it means to belong. To start, I had students work at their tables and come up with a list of everything they had in common. After hearing some shares across the room, we read José Olivarez’s “I Walk Into Every Room and Yell ‘Where The Mexicans At’.” We talked about why the poet might feel lonely or why he’s looking for his people, and started writing about the groups we might seek out in a room.
No poems for this week, but looking forward to sharing some poems next week!
