For our last session with Waters’ 6th graders, color was on our minds! We listened to a lyric video for the Rolling Stones song “Pain It Black” and talked abut how black shows up in the poem. Then, we read “Blue” by Carl Phillips and discussed similar things – notably, is blue seen as good or bad? What things does the poet highlight as blue in their life? Take a look as these lovely, evocative color poems below.

As blue as life
by Lilian E.S.
When I close my eyes,
I see blue.
A blue as dark as dark as the bottom of the sea
I open my eyes and look up
I see the sky
That’s as pretty and blue
as an aquamarine
I sit up and see the ocean
as blue and calming
as the paint on my walls
Dollar tree white
by Rae N.
When I wake up, I see white toothpaste to brush my teeth.
My dogs play fetch with their white (now crusty brown) toy
I put on my white shinguards for me soccer game
The white frosting on a cinnamon roll is my favorite part
In Dollar Tree, the white shelves hold endless goodies
During winter, the white snow blankets the ground
The cover of my prospectus is a terrifying shade of white.
Black
by Rocky R.
Black is a common color
But feels so rare at the same
time
I see it everywhere all the
color
You see it on clothes
on. the house hold items
It’s the box of all colors
It can be a stapler or
The dark cloudy night
With stars like eyes peeping
Through
Green
by Audra M.
I wake up and gaze at my closet.
Green pops up in my line of sight.
I talk to my friends at school,
I see green hair, earrings, etc.
white drawing or reading, I see
green on the covers, and green markers.
Green candy, soda, or snacks in
my mouth.
At the square with my friends,
Green in the windows with piled products.

Blue Like
by Oliver R.
The water in my fish tank flows like sky
The sky flutters and floats as I run
My dogs pat, pat, pat behind me.
Her barks pierce through the air like
Boat horns as it floats gently across the water
Fishing for tuna with scales of blue
The scales hard as steel but soft as
Jelly but I’m always waiting for the next
Time I wait for the blue green and shine
Yellow
by Milo M.
Yellow Things
Yellow couch, yellow hats
Yellow things
Yellow mustard, yellow streets
Yellow things
Yellow shirts, yellow pants
Yellow things
It’s our color, my family color
Like a sunset it shines bright
Yellow things.
Yellow
by Julia C.
I wake up to yellow bursting through my curtains
I open my eyes to yellow the numbers on my clock
telling me that I have to start my day.
I go downstairs to yellow my kitchen wall teeming with
the sun to be the brightest thing in the house.
I eat yellow a bagel with an egg and cream cheese
I walk in yellow the sun in my eyes and all the yellow
flower around me
Just See Blue
by Charlie H.
Whenever I wake up I’m greeted
to the boring color of my dark blue
walls.
I take off my blue Colts blanket
and pry out of bed.
School is blue too, in math class I
use my blue pen to write down some
boring stuff.
It’s the afternoon and I’m taking a
shower after volleyball.
I dry off with my blue towel
and look in the mirror and see my
blue eyes
As you see blue is my favorite color

Blue
by Reeve S.
The sky,
The world.
I see.
The waves,
my eye finds.
Look up,
there’s the
bright
blue sky.
The light
the blue
sky is
bright,
Yellow
by Sam S.
I wake up in the morning, to my
yellow michigan flag, and I go downstairs,
to my pancakes and yellow butter, then
I go to the park, and play on the hill
staring at the yellow sun, just chilling!
I then go inside, to eat my lunch!
Mac and cheese, my favorite! I gobble
it down, in less than 5 minutes, then
I play some videogames, Splattoon, with
the yellow weapons. And Ink! Fortnite!
I try to get the yellow mixthics.
