Students read Sylvia Plath’s poem ‘Metaphors’ and then wrote their own metaphor-based poems. They also did some free writing around the topic of Values that you will see here.
Lesson Note:
- When you communicate an idea with a metaphor, you light up people’s sensory and motor neurons.
- You also activate emotions, prompt aha moments, and reward your audience with a sense of social interaction.
- When you’re trying to persuade, you might first seek a good story, but you may do better to seek a metaphor.-Psychology Today, ‘Want to be Persuasive? Find a Metaphor’ by Bill Birchard, 2023

Trust Is A…
by Adelaide S.
Trust is a rope
if it snaps, it never goes back completely
Trust is a whisper behind a hand
hidden from others
Trust is a secret
never to be told
Trust is a balance
a person on a tight wire
Trust is a relationship
it builds
it holds
Trust can be broken
Honesty
by Laila L.
A present can be good or bad
or both, all that matters is if you like it or
not, presents are full of surprise
it can come in different ways
From being on time or getting something
correct, honesty can be a present. It is
good but also bad, you can like it
but also dislike it, but all that
matters if you forgive that person for
giving that present.
Honesty is a present.

Chocolate
by Cora W.
Talking is a bar of chocolate
big enough and it will and it will save the world
If enough people come with open
ears, hungry stomachs, willing minds
We can accomplish feats never dreamed
There can be plenty for everyone
If we all try and believe and hope
Little bits of everyone until
We are full of love and chocolate.
Metaphors
by Jack M.
A glass half full that never depletes
An hourglass emptying onto a fertile piece of land
It’s that one phone call when you need it most
I’m looking for treasure and find a cigarette butt
And a red road that stretches from England to Egypt

Trust
by Damarlyon B.
Trust is a flame
that can sometimes go out
Coming Home
by Miles K.
this week is homecoming week, the week of
the sign
the fireworks
the house
the horn
the clock
Don’t let it slip through your hands.
Have fun.

Be This Nice
by Thomas S.
Honesty.
if it is not used correctly, it is harmful
Kindness
is a drug
it is addictive and cold
by good for you.
Untitled
by Santiago M.
I think that honesty is important because if you
don’t tell the truth a lot of the time, they won’t believe you
and when you are trying to get something
or you are serious about someone or something
they won’t ever believe you again
in their whole life.
The end.
