What do you think about as you drift off to sleep? We used Li Po’s contemplative “Quiet Night Thoughts,” to consider our thoughts between waking life and dreams. Because he is so skilled in brevity, we also used the poem to think about line breaks, sometimes tricky for any poet! We tried smushing the poem into a paragraph, and then breaking it back out, and the students discussed how Li Po makes a sleepy night rhythm, full of popping images with the line breaks as intended. Enjoy their work below!

The Dream
Julissa G.
I see stars and
the moon and I
hug my stuffed bears
I dream about
family and
school
I See At Night
Katherine
I like to see the stars
then I go to sleep
I read my book to go
to sleep
I eat milk and cookies then
I go to sleep
I say good night to my family
and go to sleep

Before I go to bed
there is a peluche
on my bed and stars
under the window on the cielo:
Yo pienso en la noche
que va a pasar a mañana
en la escuela y que
