7th Grade- Perhaps we write ode poems

After reading Perhaps the World Ends Here by Joy Harjo, some students were having a hard time tapping into their creativity and coming up with ideas. So I gave them a second option. Write an ode poem. Students created a quick list of things they love, and objects they use on a regular basis. Then they picked one and wrote a poem talking about how awesome that thing is. Pencils were scratching away as they wrote and here are some of the results. Enjoy this week’s poets!

What Makes the Sun Beautiful

Angela J.

Oh, you shine so bright

making us sweat all over, tanning

us tan all over. Tanning us beautiful

all over your existence is enough to

cook food on the sidewalk, hot and

smoldering to suffocate.

Ode to My Bed

Ayden

My bed the place I go after school

My bed the place I go to sleep

My ned the place I go play games at

My bed the place I go to eat at

My bed the place I go to be in peace

My bed the place I go to be on the phone

My bed the place I go so I can have fun

My bed the place I go to cry

My bed the place I go to think in

My bed the place I go to fly

My bed the place I go to buy stuff

Table Poem

Deon Martin

Everything starts at

the kitchen

the way the rich tasty

pasta goes down into

you body  and how

happy you get to

see family from when

you were little

The way ya’ll play

Uno and get into

arguments over who has

Uno and more cards

that’e the stuff we

cherish
