This week we read “Hecky Naw” by Jose Olivarez and talked about words we love to use that are part of our identity and day to day lives. We also looked at some recent poems inspired by Hecky Naw written by Clissold Elementary students. The 7th graders were excited to get started on their versions and we talked a lot about some popular slang words, and words that are local to some Chicago neighborhoods. Some students are still working on their pieces so check back in next week for a few more pieces. Enjoy this week’s poets!

Gangasaur
Eummanni G.
If you my gangasaur
then I rock with you
If you my gangasaus
then you real cool
Me and my gangasaur
have alot in common
me and my gangasaur
have the same taste
The time we spend together
never goes to waste
People trying to kill our vibe
that the people we hate
we are 4-lifers
And there’s no need to debate
no need to decipher
