This week we read Gwendolyn Brook’s signature poem We Real Cool and talked about how rhythm is an essential element of writing poetry. Students then picked a favorite song and used it’s rhythm as a source of inspiration to talk about misconceptions adults have about their generation. Enjoy this week’s poets!

They say when they were younger I did my

They say kids these days are out of control.
Ight.
They say our attitudes are bad.
Ight.
They say our clothes too tight and tiny.

Why think, I got more problems or how you
would say short tempered.
Why shout, say I’m loud, but I say
why I think.
Don’t keep, these foolish thoughts with you,
Don’t worry.
I’m not, dumb to you, look at me
count 1 to 2
see me
I need, to shine like a star
that’s who we are.
