We Real Cool: Misconceptions about this Generation

This week we focused on including rhythm and rhyme in poetry, gaining inspiration from Gwendolyn Brooks’ iconic poem “We Real Cool.” Our poetry prompt was to write a poem about others’ misconceptions about the current generation of students.

Gen Z
by Ariana A.

Disrespectful
We’re annoyed and…
We’re just being ourselves…
I swear they’re so obsessed
You’re lazy
School is too much and I want to
Sleep all day… I’m trying my best.
Stop being a troublemaker
I’m trying to have fun and figure out
myself.

We’re not caring too much
We’re learning how to care.

We’re irresponsible
We’re learning to take responsibility.

The best generation
by Cora Q.

People say we do too much
We’re just being ourself
People say we’re addicted to our
Phone that’s just how we communicate
People say we mean I be mean if
Someone is mean to me.

What was left broken.
by Anonymous

Do you even really try
Do you really understand?
All you have to do is try
Just try, try, try, try
Just open your eyes
Then you will see

They call us lazy
we’re not lazy
we’re going crazy
Trying to fix what was left broken

You get to retire
We’re just too tired trying to fix what
was left broken

Misconceptions
by Lamine

“We’re selfish.” We’re learning how to care
for ourselves.

“We’re lazy.” We are adjusting to going out more.

“We can’t do work.” Just because we don’t do
manual work doesn’t mean we can’t make
income.

“We can’t do anything.” Well this one just
is not true.

“We aren’t good at sports.” We are better
at many things than just sports.

Misconceptions
by Aisha N.

We’re ignorant. We’re lazy. I wish I could say
we’re tired of coming to school
we’re tired of failure when we put in
courage for success.
From fixed to growth but we still
are put in the category of “suspect.”

The Truth
by Benjamin T.

A hoodie does not make someone bad
They could be cold
Being quiet does not mean you’re distracted
They’re just thinking
The clothes you wear doesn’t make you bad
They are expressing themselves
Staying inside does not make me lazy.
That’s not the truth.
