Thanks for the Memories

In juxtaposition to last week’s very stream-of-consciousness poem, we read a more narrative effort, Edna St. Vincent Millay‘s “Recuerdo.” Students recognized its regular rhyme scheme, and our discussions revolved around who the main characters might be in the poem; at one point they refer to someone called “mother,” but we decided it wasn’t necessarily their mom. We also talked about the actions described in the poem, such as going “back and forth all night on the ferry,” eating apples and pears, and the characters giving away all their money but not their subway fares (which they need to get home). In each classroom, someone asked (or knew) that the title was Spanish for memory or I remember, so the students wrote their own memory poems…
