Emily Dickinson’s “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers” was our focus this week. We talked about its multitudinous use of em dashes, unusual capitalization, and rhyme, but especially its central metaphor comparing a bird with hope. While Dickinson never specifies the kind of bird, details in the poem hint at certain breeds, such as those you might find near “the strangest Sea,” “in the chillest land,” or singing a “tune without . . . words.”
Seguing to creating their own poems, the students wrote their own takes on hope.
