Greetings West Park poetry friends and followers! We are embarking on an eight-week poetry journey and it’s off to an incredible start! We began by reading two short poems by Francisco Alarcón, “A Blank White Page / Una hoja en blanco” and “To Write Poetry / Para escribir poesía.” The poems made us wonder, Can you touch, smell, and taste words?
To prepare to write their own first poems, students responded to the questions, How do you see yourself? How do you want others to see you? Students then collected words to describe themselves, their identities, and their interests… and got busy writing. We hope you enjoy this week’s selection of poems!
(*Be sure to check this blog regularly, as several students will have their writing published every week. All students will be published once during the next 8 weeks.*)

Yes I am mean but I’m
also nice. Yes I’m pretty
but I’m loyal. Yes I’m crazy
but I’m fun. I’m a quiet-
overthinker. Long-lashes,
nice eyebrows, and long
dark brown hair. She
doesn’t know who or
what she is but she
is something. She falls in
love easy but she falls
hard. That’s me and
if you don’t like me
then leave.
