Ode Poems

Ode Poems are written to celebrate people, places, things or ideas. We discussed, how Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, wrote ode poems about objects that are often overlooked, or taken for granted, like a lemon, or a pair of socks. This week we worked on our own odes, and celebrated some of the things in our lives that are worthy of being honored with a poem.

Ode to Wigs Samariah M.

A new wig

The way it smells fresh out

the box or bag

The way it comes in different colors

Red, pink, blonde or jet black.

The way it comes in 30 inch

waving through the air

The way it fits my big forehead

Making it look small.

Oh, oh, new fresh wig,

The way I can pick from frontal to closure

18 inch to 30 inch

The way I feel like a bad b-word when

I get it installed.

the way I run my hand through the softness.

making my joy come alive.

Oh, oh fresh new wig.

the way I feel Serenity let my “hair” go like it’s

my real hair and I can feel it.

The way I go broke in one click or

A button

The way it makes me mad when

it get happy.

Oh, oh new wig. I love you.

Ode to My Sweater Celeste P.

That keeps me warm

comfortable and cozy

Black with a hood

wear it when I’m cold

long sleeve and stretchy

like an old friend

always there always

ready to wear.

Ode to Natural Hair Nylah J.

Naturally curly

Oh the shrinkage when it’s wet

tangled and knotted

when it’s straight it’s to the middle of my back.

Throw it in a ponytail

running late, let it lay

No gel needed

Bursting with color

Mama yelling, saying fix that s***!

No I say

My hair is natural.

My hair is me.
