We Will A Joyful World: Odes @ ALS

This week the 4th graders at Avondale Logandale and I read Ode to Enchanted Light by Pablo Neruda. This poem leaves with the sense that the poet is in love with the world, and he’s watching it shimmer. He condenses his love of the world down to a love poem to light.

I asked the students to write an ode to something in nature that is as striking to them as light is to Neruda. This was also our first attempt to think critically about stanzas and how to use them best. Enjoy!

Fire
Erick H.

Fire, that heat,
that gives
us power,

The heat gives
me energy, too,
go run

The fire, something
like a rumble or power,
that power, something good

Trees
Julian L.

The thing that needs water
grows to be big

The giver for our oxygen
to breathe

The giver of homes to
small little animals
to stay

So awesome, the thing
has given life

Flowers
Angie A.

On the grass, flowers,
The light hitting the blue,
pretty as could be

A bee buzzing all around it,
little daisy blooming,
butterfly drinking nectar

Oh the sweet nectar,
A sweet smell coming out
It gives us sweet oxygen

We will a joyful world with flowers
