Our Names, Our Seasons

It’s getting chilly and we’re feeling it! Students at Howe started the week with Nikki Giovanni’s “Winter Poem,” which got us thinking about the things we look forward to (or dread) about the coldest season.

We thought about names, too, and what the people in our lives call us. After reading a Jason Reynolds piece. Milani writes about her many names from the people in her life.

“Winter Poem by Brazil, 4th grade

I see snow and it is cold
build a snowman
you can open presents
I feel happy it’s cold
I can get a iPad
I can get a camera
I can get new clothes
I can get new shoes

“My Name” by Milani, 4th grade

My dad calls me Milani
My sis calls me Milani
My mom calls me Loney
My friends call me baby
My dog calls me woof
My mom calls me daughter
I call myself nice
