The poets from Latino Youth High School were asked to bring in some their own pieces they’ve worked on outside of our weekly meetings. In a change of pace from our usual class, we started with listening and workshopping to each other’s pieces. Here are couple of those works in progress.

It feels like I’m running out of time, running out of air, gasping and breathing as my life fades away. People like me live in fear, unsure of who to tell. For there is no space for people like us who are hated for a simple thing that’s called love. And it makes my blood burn like the fires in hell. but i choose to stay in silence and not say a word because i live in fear. The fear of the unknown, it’s like being on a roller coaster that’s slowly creeping up on the drop. It’s not knowing how steep the drop is, it’s the feeling of your stomach knotting up just seconds before the fall. What will you do when i come out? will there be that acceptance? that love? or will you shun me out and be cold.

I like your face and the way you seem to be
Because I don’t know your personality
You’ve got that chill aura, that chill vibe
Remind me of better times
Spitting bars through our souls
Influencing us to reach our goals
