This week, our fourth and fifth grade students got a double writing treat. On Wednesday, we turned Ms. Manning’s classroom into 1950’s Chicago with a reading of “We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks. Then we chatted about what makes something “cool.” One student said watching people do backflips is cool because it is a talent that not many people can do. Students gave me some other words that they use similar to “cool” such as “rad” “dope” or “awesome” before spending some time brainstorming what makes them all cool as individuals. One of the best parts of these poems is how vastly different each student is, but how they are each their own special brand of “cool.” Check out some of the awesome poems written this week below:

What makes me and my friends cool is how they have an awesome personality,
amazing hair, incredible outfits, pretty shoes, and a good attitude. My friends
also know how to keep a secret and have loyalty. They are always there for people.
Tariq L.
I am cool because I like basketball.
Sometimes I play soccer and football.
I play games, watch TV with my friends, some of them.
I play on my phone.
Goodness A.
We real cool because we always get As.
We real cool because we know how to draw.
We real cool because we like to paint.
We cool because we are nice.
