Hybrid learning continued during National Poetry Month in April. After weeks of reading and writing poems written in free verse, Avondale Logandale 5th graders explored the Haiku, or Hokku a poetry form of Japanese origin. To compose haiku, visual impressions and ideas must be condensed into 3-line poems with the following syllabic formula: Line 1: 5 syllables, Line 2: 7 syllables, Line 3: 5 syllables. We read haiku written by a number of poets, including Matsuo Bashō, Jacqueline Woodson, Kris Hemensley, Richard Wright, and Sonia Sanchez. Students wrote their own haiku and haiku-inspired poems, sometimes building a longer poem from haiku stanzas!
